Me’isone, the Amharic acronym for the All-Ethiopian Socialist Movement, was founded in Hamburg, Germany, in 1968 and Haile Fida was its first general secretary. Me’isone operated underground until the start of the Ethiopian revolution in 1974.
From April 1976 to August 1977, Me’isone adopted a critical support policy towards the Derg under the National Democratic Revolution Programme, proclaimed in April 1976 by the Derg. To implement this programme, the Provisional Office for Mass Organizational Affairs (POMOA)was created, and Haile Fida was its President.
Derg and Me’isone’s political differences resulted in Me’isone withdrawing its critical support policy in August 1977. Its prominent leaders went underground and most of them were executed, killed and exiled.
Me’isone continued its political activities outside the country, notably in Europe and the USA. In addition, Me’isone played an important role through different opposition coalition organisations such as the Coalition of Ethiopian Democratic Forces (CODE) and the Union of Ethiopian opposition organisations (ኢተፖድህ).
