The Solidarity Committee with Ethiopia (COSETH) was created in 1985 to provide assistance to victims of repression and human rights violations under the Derg regime. The two main activities of the organisation were providing assistance to political prisoners and refugees.

COSETH’s activities had to be carried out discreetly in order to protect the underground network that worked on behalf of victims of political repression. Supporting political prisoners under a particularly repressive regime that does not permit solidarity groups to operate was a very risky activity. In this regard, COSETH called for collective reflection on methods of supporting prisoners.

By the end of the 1980s, COSETH had concluded that, important as it was, solidarity work did not provide a lasting solution to human rights violations in the country. In 1990, COSETH was replaced by the Research and Action Group for Peace in Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa (GRAPECA) which had a wider agenda.
