GRAPECA was created in 1990, when armed conflicts between different liberation fronts and the government put the country in a cycle of violence, with the objective to contribute to countering the culture of violence that was engulfing Ethiopia.

The two main objectives were:

  1. To encourage research into the causes and consequences of violence in Ethiopia and promote alternatives to foster the development of peace culture.
  2. To develop an action programme aimed at promoting lasting peace, and to establish alternative structures capable of mobilizing society.

GRAPECA’s activities were organized around several axes, both within and outside Ethiopia, of which:
